This is an opportunity to meet face to face and exchange ideas around what works to enhance and sustain family engagement in schools to improve outcomes for children with disabilities. Strategies to start and run local special education parent groups/advisory groups will be discussed and shared. Come and network with other parent leaders in your county.

Empowering Children of ALL Abilities
Project Win Win Employment Training
Pathways began an innovative employment training program for children ages 12 and above in May 2008. Since then, the program has grown tremendously. It is housed in our studio facility in Boonton, NJ. 
Richard Constable, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs visited the program in November 2014 and was amazed at the array of programs and how the children trained alongside their peers for workforce placement. The program does three things a) Trains children for careers they are passionate about, b) Works to place children in job settings, and c) Teaches about the possibility of starting an entrepreneurship. Today the world is filled with opportuntity and the work force is changing constantly in a way that helps those with disabilities. Learn how you can begin to train early to get the skills needed to be successful in a dynamic workforce!
The Harlem Wizards Are Back!
Join us for a great afternoon of fun, basketball hoops, and entertainment. The Wizards are coming Sunday – February 15, 2015 at 2:00pm at the Montville Township High School large gym. The Montville SuperStars made up of parents, teachers and Pathways’ basketball players are taking on the Harlem Wizards. All of our $30.00 Courtside tickets are sold out. This recipe will no doubt capture the heart of chocolate lovers everywhere! We tried this New Years Eve and could not stop eating it, the fondue was heavenly!

Decoding Dyslexia NJ Sussex County Chapter Forming NOW!

Our first meeting; “MEET and GREET!”

Will be held this Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Living Waters Fellowship Board Room, on the third floor of 93A Spring Street, Newton, NJ at 7:00PM

Decoding Dyslexia – NJ

is a grassroots movement driven by NJ families concerned with the limited access to educational interventions for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities within our public schools. We aim to raise dyslexia awareness, empower families to support their children and inform policy-makers on best practices to identify, re-mediate and support students with dyslexia in NJ public schools.

This is our first get together of the Sussex County chapter of Decoding Dyslexia and is designed to be a meet and greet. Please note the meeting is on the 3rd floor in the board room. Hope to see you there!

Christ Church Budd Lake Worship Service for Special Needs Families Begins Eighth Year

All God’s Children is a non-denominational Christian church service designed for all school-aged children, with a special welcome for families dealing with autism, ADHD, Aspergers, Downs and other developmental disabilities. The eighth year inaugural service kicks off on September 21st, initiating a series of twice-monthly worship services at Christ Church Budd Lake, to be held every first and third Sunday at 9AM.

Catering to short attention spans, the All God’s Children service is a lively combination of music, prayer, Bible stories, movement and communion.  The essential message of God’s love and joy for all of His children is presented in a simplified, meaningful way.  This service brings together children with disabilities AND children without disabilities to learn together, and from each other, in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance. Following the half-hour service, parents share refreshments and ideas while the children enjoy snacks with adult supervision.

This unique service has been profiled in several media outlets as a provider of a welcoming worship space for families with exceptionally active and/or vocal children, who often are diagnosed with Aspergers, ADD, autism, or a host of other conditions. Each child participates to the best of their individual abilities along with their families.  In addition, several churches across NJ have instituted their own special needs services using this program as their model.

The number of participants continues to grow, along with a growing sense of the importance of sharing the Christian faith with ALL of God’s extraordinary young people.  Come and pray for healing, strength, progress, and enlightenment as we share our spiritual journeys!

Without support, students with language-based learning disabilities crumble

It is commonly understood that levels of support for students with language-based learning disabilities begin to wane after the completion of grade school. While public elementary programs may offer students a multisensory structured approach to language, many families live in fear of the transition to the middle grades. This fear is only intensified when we consider the statistics for these students and their lifelong pursuits of literacy.

Early Interventions have been proven effective. However, while most schools continueto depend on the Discrepancy Model for the identification of children with disabilities, many students do not exhibit a broad enough discrepancy early on, and thus do not qualify for interventions early enough. Many of these students, as a result, will require life-long support in order to achieve academic success. Seventy-five percent of children who are not intervened upon by the third grade will require some level of support for the duration of their education. Unfortunately, less than two percent of these students will pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Between 15% and 20% of students experience weaknesses in language processes and many, or most, of them will require lifelong support in reading because of our current identification procedures. What happens when we do not provide the critical on-going supports necessary for success? Well, according to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, approximately 7,000 American high school students drop out of each day- 1.3 million students a year! Let that number stew for a moment- 1.3 million a year. According to Mr. Duncan, nearly 30% of students will drop out of school in the United States.
